Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has officially launched the construction of the Bishoftu International Airport, one of the world\u2019s largest and most modern aviation hubs. The airport is expected to rank among the top fifteen largest and most advanced airports globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to Addis Media Network Digital, Berket Admasu, a lecturer in the Department of Economics at Wachemo University, said the transport sector plays a vital role in national development, with air transport becoming increasingly important in today\u2019s globalized economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lecturer explained that the new airport will significantly increase passenger traffic and cargo services, leading to a major rise in aviation revenue. This, in turn, will make a strong contribution to Ethiopia\u2019s overall national income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berket also noted that the airport will strengthen Ethiopia\u2019s tourism industry by making it easier for large numbers of international visitors to travel to the country, building on recent gains in the sector. In addition, he pointed out that efficient transport infrastructure is one of the first factors international investors consider when choosing where to invest. In this regard, the Bishoftu International Airport will enhance Ethiopia\u2019s attractiveness to global investors, boosting foreign direct investment inflows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Large-scale projects such as this, he said, also create significant employment opportunities. The airport alone is expected to generate thousands of jobs, supporting inclusive and sustainable economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new airport will further support the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and East African trade integration by improving logistics, connectivity, and access to markets, strengthening Ethiopia\u2019s role as a regional trade and transport hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berket added that major national projects such as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), oil and gas development, fertilizer factories, and airport infrastructure are playing a critical role in stimulating the economy and expanding public benefit, positioning Ethiopia to emerge as one of Africa\u2019s leading economic powers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
