{"id":1264,"date":"2026-01-24T16:55:33","date_gmt":"2026-01-24T16:55:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.amn.gov.et\/en\/?p=1264"},"modified":"2026-01-24T16:55:35","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T16:55:35","slug":"ethiopias-quest-for-access-to-the-sea-port-is-legitimate-and-reasonable-german-foreign-minister-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amn.gov.et\/en\/ethiopias-quest-for-access-to-the-sea-port-is-legitimate-and-reasonable-german-foreign-minister-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethiopia\u2019s Quest for Access to the Sea Port is Legitimate and Reasonable \u2013 German Foreign Minister"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>AMN Plus -January 22\/2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethiopia\u2019s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos(PhD), held discussions at his office with Germany\u2019s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Johann Wadephul(PhD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two ministers discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, as well as issues related to multilateral diplomatic cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a joint press statement following the talks, the ministers noted that the recent meeting between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed(PhD) and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders\u2019 Summit has created renewed momentum for the strategic partnership between Ethiopia and Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For his part, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reaffirmed that Germany will continue to strengthen its comprehensive cooperation with Ethiopia, recognizing the country\u2019s role as the seat of the African Union and a key influential actor in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"980\" height=\"544\" src=\"https:\/\/www.amn.gov.et\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/11.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.amn.gov.et\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/11.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.amn.gov.et\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/11-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.amn.gov.et\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/11-768x426.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The foreign minister also stated that Ethiopia offers broad investment opportunities for German companies, citing the Bishoftu International Airport currently under construction as a prime example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The minister added that, in light of Ethiopia\u2019s ongoing macroeconomic reforms, German companies are expected to further expand their engagement in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wadephul commended Ethiopia\u2019s efforts to promote peace and stability in the Horn of Africa, as well as its role in supporting the peacekeeping mission in Somalia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Noting that Ethiopia has a population exceeding 130 million, the German foreign minister stated that Ethiopia\u2019s demand for access to the sea is legitimate and reasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The minister also conveyed his congratulations to Ethiopia on being selected to host the 32nd Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-32).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethiopia\u2019s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos, called on Germany to further strengthen its support in the areas of technology transfer, industry, and trade in order to enhance political and development cooperation between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethiopia and Germany share a long-standing and strong diplomatic relationship that spans more than 120 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By Birhanu Workneh<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AMN Plus -January 22\/2026 Ethiopia\u2019s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos(PhD), held discussions at his office with Germany\u2019s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Johann Wadephul(PhD).
