{"id":1768,"date":"2026-03-17T08:03:17","date_gmt":"2026-03-17T08:03:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.amn.gov.et\/en\/?p=1768"},"modified":"2026-03-17T08:03:18","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T08:03:18","slug":"addis-ababa-sets-model-for-integrating-environmental-protection-with-tourism-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amn.gov.et\/en\/addis-ababa-sets-model-for-integrating-environmental-protection-with-tourism-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Addis Ababa Sets Model for Integrating Environmental Protection with Tourism Development"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>AMN PLUS March 17\/2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiatives undertaken in Ethiopia\u2019s capital, Addis Ababa, to link environmental protection with tourism have been praised as exemplary by representatives of the Zambezi River Basin Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a visit to the Addis Ababa Riverside Development Project, representatives of the Commission\u2019s member countries commended the city\u2019s transformation of its riverbanks into vibrant public recreational spaces and attractive urban landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Felix Mosi Ngamlagosi, Executive Secretary of the Zambezi Watercourse Commission, Addis Ababa is becoming a model for African cities seeking to develop well-planned, attractive environments that can also serve as tourism destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"525\" src=\"https:\/\/www.amn.gov.et\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/03\/652070114_960952626301525_6781999148416431093_n-1024x525.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.amn.gov.et\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/03\/652070114_960952626301525_6781999148416431093_n-1024x525.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.amn.gov.et\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/03\/652070114_960952626301525_6781999148416431093_n-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.amn.gov.et\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/03\/652070114_960952626301525_6781999148416431093_n-768x394.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.amn.gov.et\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/03\/652070114_960952626301525_6781999148416431093_n.jpg 1366w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that the ongoing changes in the Ethiopian capital are making the city an increasingly preferred destination for recreation and economic activities. Ngamlagosi encouraged other African cities to learn from Addis Ababa\u2019s approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chito Phiri, who visited from Zimbabwe, praised the development of public recreational parks in the city, saying the initiative enhances the capital\u2019s appearance while creating a comfortable environment for residents and visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also highlighted that the strong emphasis placed on pedestrian walkways along the riverside and within the city\u2019s corridor development projects helps promote a culture of walking, which contributes to healthier urban living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Manuel Chagulo from Mozambique said he had previously visited Addis Ababa 15 years ago and was impressed by the remarkable transformation and growth the city has undergone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He emphasized that Ethiopia has achieved tangible progress through green development initiatives, adding that the changes taking place in Addis Ababa could serve as an example for other countries across Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By Leta Teresa<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AMN PLUS March 17\/2026 The initiatives undertaken in Ethiopia\u2019s capital, Addis Ababa, to link environmental protection with tourism have been praised as exemplary by representatives of the Zambezi River Basin Commission.
