More cities and regions across the continent are positioning themselves as top international competition spots.

South Africa is a leading mountain biking (MTB) hub on the continent. It offers thousands of kilometers of trails, many bike parks, and a lively cycling community. Cape Town and the wider Western Cape have earned global recognition by hosting well-known events like the Absa Cape Epic and the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

At the same time, countries such as Rwanda and Morocco are establishing themselves as prime MTB destinations. They are attracting international athletes and fans by combining top-level competition with well-planned tourism infrastructure. This showcases their unique and challenging terrains.

Though mountain biking is relatively new in Ethiopia compared to road cycling, places like Entoto Park are becoming popular destinations for developing skills through practice and competition. On the other hand, the development of corridors and riversides in Addis Ababa has led to the creation of more conducive environments for road cycling and racing activities.

Globally, competitions recognized by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) represent the highest level of the sport. Major cities like Barcelona and Paris are iconic race hubs that attract the world’s top competitors.

In this context, Ethiopia will host a landmark event: the first-ever African Cities Mountain Bike Championship. It is scheduled for May 3, 2026, in Addis Ababa. This competition will bring together athletes from 35 countries, marking an important milestone for cycling in the continent.

Hosting this championship is a great chance for Addis Ababa and Ethiopia to highlight their natural beauty, urban growth, and tourism potential to a global audience. It is also an opportunity to encourage the growth of mountain biking in the country.

By Leta Teresa

AMN PLUS-May 1, 2026 Mountain biking is rapidly becoming one of the fastest-growing sports in Africa.
