The \u201cCity That Feeds Its Citizens\u201d movement and the network of feeding centers being developed in Addis Ababa, aimed at transforming the city from a mere collection of buildings into a social institution where human dignity is respected, has become a major strategic step in connecting the capital to the basic needs of its residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This system, which provides free meals at least once a day to low-income residents, vulnerable groups, and street dwellers, while also delivering food directly to elderly and sick citizens who are unable to move, demonstrates the government\u2019s commitment to drawing upon Ethiopia\u2019s social values and creating a structural foundation for the philosophy of Medemer (synergy).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Ethiopia has long upheld a tradition of sharing meals within communities, that culture was never fully institutionalized into a coordinated system. Today, however, it is being transformed into a structured public responsibility integrated with a modern supply chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The people-centered development strategy promoted through the philosophy of Medemer teaches that the growth of a city should not be measured solely by the height of its buildings, but by the quality of life and human dignity of its citizens. This has created an important balance between beautifying the city through corridor development projects and ensuring the survival and well-being of residents. In doing so, it has practically affirmed the principles long advocated by international scholars of urban sociology and social justice regarding urban rights and inclusive development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The feeding centers are not merely food banks; they are platforms for social interaction where different segments of society can connect with one another, strengthening the city\u2019s social fabric. By ensuring that citizens are able to eat at least once a day, the city administration is investing in human capacity and social stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program is also helping break the cycle of poverty by enabling low-income residents to redirect money previously spent on food toward housing, healthcare, and their children\u2019s education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than depending on external assistance to manage such a massive initiative \u2014 one that requires significant financing and strict quality control \u2014 the project has cultivated a spirit of self-reliance by mobilizing domestic investors and volunteers. By linking products from urban agriculture directly to the feeding centers, the initiative has also helped mitigate the impact of price fluctuations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond making the city more modern and visually attractive, this movement is laying a strong social foundation where citizens can thrive with dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
