Former Kenyan President and Head of the African Union (AU) Election Observer Mission, Uhuru Kenyatta, said the mission was deployed from May 26 to June 3, 2026, to observe Ethiopia’s 7th General Election and assess its compliance with applicable international and regional standards, as well as Ethiopia’s legal framework governing democratic elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presenting the mission’s preliminary report, Kenyatta noted that the deployment was preceded by a pre-election assessment mission conducted from March 16\u201320, 2026, to evaluate the pre-election environment and the country’s preparedness for the polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Kenyatta, the mission engaged with key stakeholders, including the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), government institutions supporting the electoral process, political parties, civil society organizations, and citizen observer groups, representatives of the diplomatic and international community, the United Nations, and other election observation missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on observations and consultations conducted since the mission’s arrival, Kenyatta said the electoral process remained ongoing. Highlighting positive practices observed during the preliminary stage, he said Election Day was generally calm, with voting proceeding in an orderly manner and voters being processed steadily at most polling stations observed. This, he noted, provided voters with an opportunity to cast their ballots without hindrance.
“The introduction of technology in voter registration to complement manual registration processes may have contributed to the increased number of registered voters, particularly young people who are accustomed to using digital tools,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenyatta further stated that the high level of compliance with key voting procedures\u2014including ballot box sealing, voter identification, ballot stamping, and ink marking\u2014contributed to the predictability and consistency of Election day administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, polling officials and security personnel demonstrated professionalism and preparedness, reflecting NEBE’s commitment to ensuring the impartial administration of Election Day processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also commended citizens for their strong commitment to voting, as demonstrated by sustained and patient queues throughout the day.
“There was broad and visible deployment of domestic observer teams, party agents, and media across multiple regions, demonstrating the willingness of election authorities to subject Election Day administration to public scrutiny and accountability,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenyatta added that essential election materials were available at all polling stations observed, suggesting that logistical preparations for the election were generally adequate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further noted that the extension of voting hours allowed greater voter participation and have enabled some voters to cast their ballots who otherwise could have been excluded had voting been limited to the originally scheduled 12-hour period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
