What began as Ethiopia’s response to climate change and environmental degradation has grown into one of the world’s largest tree-planting programs, attracting international attention and admiration.

Over the past seven years, Ethiopia has planted more than 48 billion seedlings across the country, transforming landscapes, restoring degraded ecosystems, and strengthening climate resilience.

The initiative has become a cornerstone of Ethiopia’s broader environmental and sustainable development agenda, demonstrating the country’s commitment to combating climate change through practical, large-scale action.

As one of Ethiopia’s flagship climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, the Green Legacy Initiative mobilizes an average of 25 million citizens annually. Communities across urban and rural areas actively participate in seedling production, planting campaigns, and environmental conservation activities, making the program one of the largest mass environmental mobilization efforts in the world.

The impact of the initiative extends far beyond increasing forest cover. It has significantly enhanced vegetation density, contributed to biodiversity restoration, reduced land degradation, and helped curb soil erosion.

The expanded green coverage has also played an important role in protecting watersheds, reducing sedimentation in rivers and reservoirs, improving water retention, and supporting agricultural productivity.

Beyond its environmental achievements, the Green Legacy Initiative has emerged as a source of inspiration for neighboring countries and an increasingly important model for nations across Africa and beyond.

Ethiopia’s experience in implementing large-scale, community-driven environmental programs is now widely referenced in discussions on climate action, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable development.

The country’s leadership in advancing ambitious climate initiatives has further elevated its international standing and contributed to its selection as host of the 2027 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP32, in Addis Ababa. This recognition underscores Ethiopia’s growing role as a leading voice in global climate diplomacy and environmental stewardship.

The Green Legacy Initiative has also become a unique platform for environmental diplomacy. Heads of state and government, diplomats, leaders of international organizations, prominent global figures, and visitors attending international conferences and official engagements in Ethiopia are encouraged to plant seedlings and leave behind their own green legacy. This practice has given the initiative a distinctly international character and transformed tree planting into a symbol of solidarity in the global fight against climate change.

The active participation of international organizations based in Ethiopia, members of the diplomatic community, foreign nationals, and visiting dignitaries who have planted trees across the country serves as a powerful testament to Ethiopia’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability. Their involvement reflects growing international recognition of the initiative’s significance and its contribution to collective global climate action.

Building on the achievements of previous years, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has officially launched this year’s Green Legacy campaign under the theme “Let’s Plant Hope.” Through this ambitious national effort, Ethiopia aims to plant 8 billion seedlings at the end of this fiscal year.

Looking ahead, the nation has set an even more ambitious target of planting 65 billion seedlings by the end of 2027. With sustained public participation, strong political commitment, and growing international support, Ethiopia continues to advance steadily toward this historic vision.

The Green Legacy Initiative stands today not only as a national environmental campaign but also as a global symbol of hope, collective responsibility, and practical climate action for future generations.

By Birhanu Workneh

AMN Plus-June 17, 2026 The Green Legacy Initiative, launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed(PhD) in 2019, has evolved from a national reforestation campaign into a globally recognized environmental movement.
