The European Delegation in Ethiopia has deplored what it described recent actions by the defunct Tigray People\u2019s Liberation Front to establish a parallel regional council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April 2026, the TPLF unilaterally revived Tigray’s pre-war government, replacing the federal peace framework and removing the recognized interim administration. By reinstating wartime leader Debretsion Gebremichael as president, the party effectively restored the political structure that existed prior to the 2022 Pretoria Agreement<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move triggered international criticisms leveled against the outlawed TPLF including a recent announcement by the United States of travel restrictions imposed on the key leadership of the Front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest statement by the EU expressed concern about the tense situation in northern Ethiopia including the recent actions taken by TPLF to establish a parallel regional council, and to unilaterally enforce military conscription in Tigray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These actions, the EU said, \u201cbreaches the stipulations of the 2022 Pretoria Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA resumption of talks on the concrete implementation of CoHA by all sides is urgent,\u201d it said. \u201cWe fully support the mediation efforts led by the AU\u2019s High Representative President Obasanjo to achieve peace and stability.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to reports, the TPLF has launched activities to reignite war with the forces of the federal government, and in doing so it aligned with Eritrean forces \u2013 an assertion confirmed by the former president of the Tigray Interim Administration, Getachew Reda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 11, the African Union\u2019s High-Level Representative, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo \u2013 he mediated the peace between the federal government and the TPLF that culminated in the 2022 Pretorial agreement \u2013 visited the Tigray capital Mekele and met with the self-styled TPLF Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael to try to de-escalate tensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getachew Reda, formerly a top TPLF spokesperson and president of the Tigray Interim Administration, has been heavily critical of the hardline faction of the TPLF led by Debretsion Gebremichael, according to Pulse of Africa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
