Ethiopia\u2019s House of Peoples\u2019 Representatives is convening its 30th Regular Session in the fifth year of its current parliamentary term, ahead of the transition to a new Parliament scheduled to assume office in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the session, members of Parliament raised a wide range of issues addressing the country\u2019s social, economic, and political affairs, reflecting key national priorities and public concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to members of the House of Peoples\u2019 Representatives regarding Ethiopia\u2019s 7th General Election, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) said the election demonstrated the commitment and determination of Ethiopians to exercise their democratic rights and shape the country\u2019s future through the ballot box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prime Minister stated that more than 54 million citizens participated in the election and entrusted the government with the responsibility of continuing its leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He emphasized that the large voter turnout reflected the people\u2019s confidence and their desire to contribute to the nation\u2019s development and stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Abiy noted that this year\u2019s general election was unique due to the various challenges Ethiopia faced, including what he described as efforts by supporters of proxy conflicts aimed at destabilizing the country. He said some groups had attempted to discourage citizens from participating in the electoral process and urged people not to elect the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite such challenges, the Prime Minister told Parliament that Ethiopians from different segments of society across the country participated in the election by going to polling stations and making their choices peacefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on the composition of the new Parliament, Prime Minister Abiy said the Prosperity Party had decided to secure 85 percent of the seats in the House of Peoples\u2019 Representatives, while allocating 15 percent of seats for competing political parties that participated in the electoral process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further stated that Ethiopia\u2019s approach to parliamentary representation, which includes space for opposition parties within the legislative body, represents a unique model compared with other countries in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prime Minister reaffirmed that the government remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions, expanding political participation, and ensuring that the voices of Ethiopian citizens are reflected through elected representatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
