Speaking at the Addis Ababa City Council’s 4th Regular Session of its 5th-Year Council Meeting, Addis Ababa Mayor Her Excellency Adanech Abiebie said the city’s Early Childhood Development Program, launched with the vision of making Addis Ababa the best city in Africa to raise children, is being implemented successfully and delivering encouraging results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Mayor, the program is designed to reach approximately 1.3 million children across the city, with particular focus on 330,000 children from low-income families, through five key intervention areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She outlined the following achievements recorded during the current fiscal year:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First: The city has deployed 5,000 workers to provide parenting and caregiver counseling services. These workers conduct door-to-door counseling visits every 15 days, offering guidance and support to parents and caregivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second: Continuous nutritional support is being provided to 15,000 vulnerable mothers and children. In addition, child growth monitoring has been conducted 817,105 times at 95 health centers. To ensure appropriate medical care, 1,362 children identified with signs of growth impairment have been referred for specialized follow-up and treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third: A total of 1,155 childcare centers have been established under various models. These centers provide childcare services alongside nutrition and hygiene support, laying a strong foundation for the healthy development of future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fourth: The city’s pre-primary education initiatives have significantly improved children’s readiness for formal schooling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

School readiness, which had previously been below 50 percent, has risen to more than 99 percent on average over the past three years through play-based learning programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mayor also noted that, in line with efforts to expand recreational opportunities for children, 5,003 child-friendly playgrounds designed to support healthy childhood development have been established across Addis Ababa and are now serving communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, Mayor Adanech stated that an evaluation of the program’s outcomes indicates substantial progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a recent assessment, the prevalence of child growth challenges in Addis Ababa has improved by 4 percentage points, declining from 13 percent to 9.45 percent over recent years as a result of the interventions implemented under the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
