Ethiopia has officially commenced its landmark National Dialogue Conference, bringing together more than 4,000 delegates from across the country in a major effort to address longstanding political, ethnic, and historical divisions and lay the foundation for lasting peace, national unity, and reconciliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference, which formally opened in Addis Ababa on July 15, 2026, marks a significant milestone in the country’s peace-building process. It is being led by the independent Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (ENDC), an institution established by law in 2021 to facilitate an inclusive national dialogue and build consensus on issues that have historically divided Ethiopians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Commission, the conference follows one of the country’s most extensive public consultation processes. Agenda-setting consultations were conducted in more than 1,200 districts nationwide, gathering input from more than 200,000 citizens representing diverse political, social, cultural, and religious backgrounds. This extensive four-year grassroots consultation phase successfully laid the groundwork for the main national dialogue conference in Addis Ababa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The consultations brought together political parties, civic organizations, academic institutions, religious leaders, traditional elders, women, youth representatives, and community stakeholders. The resulting agenda reflects priorities identified by citizens during the nationwide consultations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formal deliberations are now underway, with delegates discussing issues organized under eight major thematic pillars. These include state-building, the federal system, governance in major cities, socioeconomic development, the rule of law, religious affairs, corruption, and long-term peace-building initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delegates, drawn from communities across Ethiopia, include representatives of civil society organizations, religious institutions, traditional leaders, women, youth, and political actors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference aims to create an inclusive platform where participants can openly deliberate on national challenges, identify areas of consensus, and contribute to shaping a shared vision for Ethiopia’s future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants are expected to engage in structured deliberations, with discussions designed to generate recommendations that could help strengthen national cohesion and support long-term stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dialogue process provides a vital platform for people to come together in an orderly and respectful manner, address their differences, and seek common ground. Those who attempt to undermine this process lack the capacity to derail it. A great nation cannot be diminished by petty agendas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dialogue has drawn broad participation from the majority of political parties, as well as members of the Ethiopian diaspora from South Africa, the United States, the Middle East, and other parts of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mothers carrying their children, respected community elders, and young people are all taking part in the discussions, reflecting the inclusive nature of the process and the shared commitment to shaping the country’s future through peaceful engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
