Speaker of Ethiopia’s House of Federation, Agegnehu Teshager, held talks with the Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament, Sahiba Gafarova (PhD), and her delegation on strengthening parliamentary cooperation, expanding economic ties, and addressing regional and international issues of mutual interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welcoming the delegation, Agegnehu said the visit reflects the shared determination of Ethiopia and Azerbaijan to translate their steadily growing bilateral relations into concrete and mutually beneficial outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He recalled Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s (PhD) recent official visit to Baku, describing it as a milestone that opened a new chapter in Ethiopia\u2013Azerbaijan relations by laying a strong foundation for enhanced cooperation in politics, trade, investment, energy, tourism, technology, and other strategic sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Speaker also noted that the Third Ethiopia\u2013Azerbaijan Political Consultations, held in Addis Ababa on January 15\u201316, 2025, elevated political relations between the two countries and underscored the importance of expanding knowledge and experience sharing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agegnehu commended Azerbaijan’s support for the modernization of Ethiopia’s Mesob One-Stop Service Centers, saying the partnership has significantly improved the delivery of public services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He briefed the delegation on Ethiopia’s ongoing national reform agenda and highlighted the role of the National Dialogue Commission in fostering peace, national unity, and consensus-building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Speaker also pointed to the Green Legacy Initiative and Corridor Development Projects as key drivers of environmental sustainability, urban transformation, and inclusive development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On parliamentary diplomacy, the Speaker emphasized that the friendship groups of the two legislatures can play a greater role in strengthening cooperation in lawmaking, institutional capacity building, digital parliamentary systems, and public engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also stressed the importance of enhancing collaboration among young and women parliamentarians to further deepen people-to-people ties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turning to economic cooperation, Agegnehu reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to expanding trade and investment with Azerbaijan by leveraging the opportunities created through the country’s ongoing macroeconomic reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He identified mining, oil and gas, renewable energy, tourism, science and technology, and digitalization as priority sectors with strong potential for mutually beneficial cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Speaker also invited Azerbaijani investors to explore opportunities in Ethiopia’s manufacturing, mining, services, and tourism sectors, noting that recent business forums held in Addis Ababa have helped encourage greater private-sector engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On regional affairs, Agegnehu reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability in the Horn of Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also reiterated Ethiopia’s position that its pursuit of sea access should be resolved peacefully through dialogue and on the basis of mutual benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding multilateral cooperation, he said Ethiopia is ready to deepen collaboration with Azerbaijan on United Nations Security Council reform, Ethiopia’s World Trade Organization (WTO) accession process, and other international platforms. He also sought Azerbaijan’s support for Ethiopia’s bid to host the COP32 United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation in politics, parliamentary relations, trade, investment, tourism, energy, climate action, and other areas of shared interest, while advancing a strategic partnership founded on mutual respect and shared benefit, according to Ethiopia’s House of Federation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
