Addis Ababa, the seat of the African Union and a global center of diplomacy, was until a few years ago known for its degraded environment and poor urban appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wastewater and solid waste were dumped indiscriminately across the city. Its rivers were heavily polluted, its streets were unsuitable for public transportation and recreation, and it was choked by vehicle emissions, making the air unhealthy for residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Addis Ababa has a beautiful name, a favorable geographical setting, and is blessed with abundant natural resources including rivers its overall environment and appearance did not reflect its name. For many years, it remained a capital city whose image was inconsistent with its natural potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, however, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) and Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie through nationwide initiatives such as the Green Legacy Program, corridor development, and riverside development projects, Addis Ababa has taken on a new and greener appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its rivers have been transformed into public parks and recreational areas. Its hills have been covered with lush green trees. Its streets now include bicycle lanes, and modern vehicles that produce neither smoke nor excessive noise travel through the city, making Addis Ababa a modern capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like many cities around the world, Addis Ababa is now positioned to become a global tourist destination, known for its green forests, natural parks, recreational spaces, water-surrounded landscapes, and scenic hills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When officially launching the 2026 Green Legacy Program, Mayor Adanech Abiebie stated that 90 million tree seedlings had been planted across the capital over the past seven years. She also noted that the city’s green cover had increased significantly\u2014from just 2.8 percent to 24 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the mayor, the Green Legacy Program has transformed previously barren areas into green spaces, restored degraded rivers and surrounding environments, and helped make Addis Ababa a clean, beautiful, livable city and an attractive tourist destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mayor further stated that “what we plant is hope, development, greenery, shade, our food, and ultimately prosperity.” She emphasized that the trees are planted not only for today’s benefit but also to leave future generations a legacy of greenery and prosperity rather than a burden of debt. She added that this vision demonstrates the city’s commitment to becoming a competitive and livable city on the international stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
