They yearn for the quiet comfort of stability, the chance to harvest their lands in safety, and the opportunity to rebuild their shattered lives. Yet, this collective desire for tranquility now faces a grave and urgent threat from the very political figures who claim to represent them.

Despite the desperate need for recovery, the banned Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has launched an aggressive campaign of public mobilization and war propaganda.

Leaders of this illegal faction, including Debretsion Gebremichael and Fetlework Gebregziabher, have openly stated the purpose of these mass gatherings: to prepare the region for renewed armed confrontation with the Federal Government of Ethiopia.

Through inflammatory public remarks, the clique is actively laying the political and psychological groundwork for another destructive war, declaring an intention to align with anti-Ethiopian forces both at home and abroad with threats of marching from the gates of Addis Ababa.

This reckless rhetoric directly undermines the fragile peace established under the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement of November 2022.

When that landmark accord was signed, the TPLF leadership was in severe military and political disarray. Rather than pursuing total military elimination, the Federal Government chose a negotiated settlement to grant the people of Tigray a desperately needed window to heal, rebuild, and pursue a peaceful future.

However, instead of using the post-war period for rehabilitation and reconstruction, the faction’s leadership is accused of secretly rearming, reorganizing, and trampling upon the core principles of the peace they once accepted.

Equally alarming is the shadowy convergence of interests threatening to drag the region back into the abyss. Analysts point to an emerging, paradoxical alliance between TPLF remnants and the Eritrean government, a regime that historically seeks to keep Ethiopia divided. For Asmara, this tactical arrangement seeks to use Tigray as a buffer zone, while for the TPLF leadership, it is a desperate bid to regain political relevance.

This pivot is particularly jarring given that the faction’s own internal assessments previously documented severe atrocities committed by Eritrean forces during the conflict, revealing that current alliances are being forged at the direct expense of ordinary Tigrayan lives.

Political commentators and international observers warn that such escalation could destabilize not just northern Ethiopia, but the wider Horn of Africa. A renewed cycle of conflict threatens to disrupt critical economic corridors, intensify humanitarian suffering, and invite widespread regional insecurity.

Analysts argue that the international community, including the United Nations, the African Union, and key global partners, can no longer remain passive or limit itself to expressions of concern. Meaningful diplomatic pressure, targeted sanctions, and strict isolation must be directed at the individuals orchestrating this military mobilization.

Ultimately, the choice facing the region is stark, but the voice of the people remains unwavering. The cost of international inaction and internal warmongering would be measured in unimaginable fresh bloodshed and a prolonged regional crisis.

Yet, above the drumbeat of renewed hostility rises the undeniable truth of public sentiment: the mothers, fathers, youth, and children of Tigray have suffered enough. They have locked their eyes on a future defined by prosperity, human dignity, and reconciliation, demanding that the machinery of war be silenced once and for all so that peace may finally take root.

Throw Away the Drums of War!

AMN English

AMN PLUS- July 31/2026 For the millions who call Tigray home, the scars of yesterday’s devastation are still too fresh to bear the thought of tomorrow’s gunfire.
