The Green Legacy Initiative, which has been implemented continuously since 2019, has proven to be more than an environmental campaign. Beyond expanding Ethiopia’s green cover, it has delivered significant results in strengthening food security and increasing foreign exchange earnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ethiopia’s rise to become the second-largest avocado exporter in Africa marks a major achievement, reflecting the country’s vast agricultural potential and its rapidly growing economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), the Green Legacy Initiative has not only expanded the nation’s forest cover but has also made a substantial contribution to improving food security and generating foreign currency revenues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By increasing forest cover and improving the local climate, the initiative has created favorable conditions for fruit crops such as avocados, bananas, papayas, and others to thrive with adequate moisture and improved growing environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tree-planting efforts, along with soil and water conservation measures on previously degraded land, have reduced soil erosion and supported the expansion of fruit and vegetable production across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With fertile land and favorable agroecological conditions across its various regions, Ethiopia possesses strong comparative advantages for fruit production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ethiopian avocados, known for their high quality, have become increasingly sought after in European, Middle Eastern, and other international markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The expansion of modern facilities for processing, storage, and quality control has further strengthened the competitiveness of Ethiopian avocados in global markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during this year’s one-day nationwide tree-planting campaign, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) said that while Ethiopia’s achievement of becoming Africa’s second-largest avocado exporter is encouraging, the country can attain the top position if the ongoing efforts are sustained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
