Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has said Bahir Dar is poised to become a model city of development and transformation for both Ethiopia and Africa, citing its rich history, strategic location, and exceptional natural attractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the inauguration of the new terminal at Bahir Dar Dejazmach Belay Zeleke International Airport, the Prime Minister said the government’s ongoing investments are aimed at transforming the city into a vibrant hub for tourism, commerce, and economic growth while preserving its historical identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abiy noted that Bahir Dar’s development vision is deeply rooted in its historical legacy. For centuries, the city served as a major commercial gateway linking central Ethiopia, particularly Shewa, with the country’s northern regions, making it one of Ethiopia’s most important centers of trade. Illustrating this legacy, the prime minister referred to the historic Saint George compound, where a lodging facility built more than two centuries ago once accommodated merchants traveling between Gorgora and central Ethiopia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Prime Minister, the site reflects Bahir Dar’s long-standing role as a commercial and cultural crossroads. He acknowledged that the city’s historical significance had not received the attention it deserved in the past. However, he said the government is now working to restore Bahir Dar’s heritage while implementing development projects that build on its unique strengths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on tourism, Abiy said major infrastructure projects are improving connectivity between Bahir Dar, Gorgora, and the islands of Lake Tana, creating an integrated tourism destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He highlighted the development of Felege Ghion Eco-Resort, the Gorgora Eco-Resort, and the operation of large vessels, including the Lake Tana cruise boat, saying these investments are expanding tourism opportunities and enhancing the visitor experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prime Minister also welcomed the increasing participation of the private sector in improving transportation between Bahir Dar and Gorgora, making it easier for visitors to explore the region’s historic islands, monasteries, and cultural heritage sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond tourism, Abiy emphasized Bahir Dar’s strong industrial potential, pointing to the establishment of the city’s industrial park as a major step toward boosting manufacturing, creating jobs, and expanding economic activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further noted that Bahir Dar is among Ethiopia’s leading cities in terms of modern urban road infrastructure. He also highlighted the construction of what he described as an unprecedented bridge in both scale and quality, calling it a landmark project for the city and the surrounding region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Prime Minister, the ongoing corridor development project will further enhance Bahir Dar’s beauty, improve its ability to host visitors, and strengthen its position as a destination for investment, tourism, and business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead, Abiy expressed confidence that the modern stadium currently under construction will further raise Bahir Dar’s profile, attracting more domestic and international visitors and reinforcing its reputation as one of Ethiopia’s premier tourism destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
