It added that the Abay contributes about 85 percent of the Nile River’s total flow.

The Ministry emphasized that discussions concerning the utilization and management of the Abay River should take these fundamental realities into consideration.

Addressing the Red Sea, the Ministry said Ethiopia is geographically and historically connected to the maritime body. Despite changes in political boundaries over time, Ethiopia remains closely connected to the Red Sea, with its nearest border located barely 30 miles from the coast.

According to the Ministry, serious discussions on regional maritime affairs and security architecture must therefore take into account Ethiopia’s legitimate interests and its enduring connection to the Red Sea.

The Ministry further stated that Ethiopia’s geographic and historical realities cannot be altered through political rhetoric, coercive measures, or acts of destabilization.

“Actions taken through proxies or acts of aggression will not change the facts on the ground,” the Ministry said, adding that such actions would not diminish Ethiopia’s legitimate interests, role, and responsibilities in the region.

The Ministry reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to peaceful engagement, mutual respect, and regional cooperation.

It also stressed that Ethiopia remains prepared to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and core national interests, while calling on regional actors to address shared challenges through constructive dialogue, partnership, and adherence to the principles of good neighborliness rather than confrontation and zero-sum approaches.

AMN PLUS — October 5/ 2026 Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed the country’s historical and geographical connections to both the Nile River and the Red Sea, stressing that its legitimate national interests must be taken into account in discussions over the region’s water, maritime, and security affairs.
