This deep-seated involvement encompasses direct military support, competition over resources, and broader regional geopolitical interests.

Accordingly Lethal Border Airstrikes was operated in October 2026. After this attack tensions reached a boiling point following devastating airstrikes targeting artisanal gold mining sites in the rugged, disputed border territory near the Halayeb Triangle.

Local rights advocacy groups, including the Sudanese Emergency Lawyers and the National Umma Party, reported that between 72 and more than 200 Sudanese civilians were killed in the strikes.

Sudanese activist networks and civil alliances condemned the attacks as a direct military massacre on Sudanese territory. They harshly criticized the SAF-led authorities in Port Sudan for their “shameful silence” and failure to protect citizens.

Egypt has direct Support in the Sudanese Civil War. Egypt views Sudan’s stability as vital to its own national security, particularly regarding water rights and border integrity. Consequently, Cairo has shifted from diplomatic mediation to active, direct support for the SAF.

Regional analysts and intelligence reports indicate that Egypt has provided logistical assistance, warplanes, and technical support to the SAF. Satellites have also captured Bayraktar Akıncı combat drones operating from Egyptian bases near the Sudanese border.

The friction generated by Egypt’s actions has sparked a direct, violent backlash on the ground. Retaliatory Shootings occurred following the border airstrikes, a Sudanese national shot and killed two Egyptian truck drivers in Khartoum, confessing it was an act of personal retaliation for his brother who died in the mining camp bombings.

Many Sudanese political factions view Egypt’s actions through a post-colonial lens, arguing that Cairo treats Sudan with a mindset of “guardianship” rather than respecting it as a fully sovereign state.

Egypt’s evolving role in the Sudanese civil war has transformed its historical alliance with Khartoum into a flashpoint of severe geopolitical tension. While Cairo views its backing of the Sudanese Armed Forces as a necessary measure to protect its own national security, water interests, and border integrity, its direct interventions—most notably the devastating October 2026 airstrikes—have alienated Sudanese civil society.

By triggering lethal retaliatory violence and drawing widespread condemnation from local civilian networks, Egypt’s actions have inadvertently fueled the very instability it sought to contain.

Ultimately, as long as Cairo continues to project a policy of “guardianship” over its neighbor, its maneuvers risk further fracturing Sudanese sovereignty and deepening the chaos of an already catastrophic conflict.

While Egypt’s actions in the Horn of Africa are focused on reinforcing its influence in the region, in reality—through tactics like applying intense proxy war pressure on Ethiopia and its involvement in Sudan—it is actually undermining peace and security across Africa and increasing the risk of proxy conflicts in the area.

By Hussen Kemal

AMN Plus-October 14, 2026 While Egypt and Sudan have historically maintained a close relationship, Cairo’s recent political and military actions are increasingly perceived by Sudanese civilian groups as unacceptable interference that worsens the instability in the war-torn nation.
