Relations between Russia and Africa are entering a new phase of strategic cooperation, guided by the principles of mutual benefit, equality and respect for national sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relations between Russia and African countries are entering a new phase of strategic cooperation, with both sides seeking to strengthen ties based on mutual benefit, sovereign equality and respect for national sovereignty. The growing cooperation also reflects shared efforts to advance common interests and enhance Africa\u2019s role in shaping a more balanced and multipolar international order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third Russia\u2013Africa Summit, taking place in Moscow, the Russian capital, brings together African leaders, including Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), alongside representatives of businesses and companies from participating countries. The summit aims to strengthen political, diplomatic and economic ties while expanding cooperation in strategic sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summit Focuses on Peace, Security and Development<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summit seeks to transform the longstanding historical ties between Russia and African countries into a practical and sustainable strategic partnership. Its key priorities include strengthening national sovereignty, promoting economic resilience, expanding technological capabilities and addressing shared regional and global challenges. Under the theme of \u201cPeace, Security and Development,\u201d the summit provides a platform for discussions on trade, investment, defense, agriculture, energy, education, science and technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ethiopia\u2013Russia Relations: A Partnership Built on History<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ethiopia and Russia share a longstanding relationship spanning more than 125 years, built on historical friendship, diplomatic engagement and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historical ties between the two countries date back to the late nineteenth century. Russia provided medical assistance to Ethiopia around the time of the Battle of Adwa in 1896, contributing to the development of relations between the two nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, cooperation has expanded across diplomatic, political, economic, educational and cultural sectors. Both countries have also emphasized the importance of national sovereignty and greater representation for developing countries in international affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expanding Diplomatic and Political Cooperation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia and Ethiopia continue to engage on issues of mutual interest through bilateral relations and international forums. Their cooperation includes discussions on sovereignty, multilateral diplomacy and Ethiopia’s participation in emerging international economic partnerships, including BRICS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two countries have also maintained engagement in defense and security, including military-technical cooperation and training. Maritime capacity development is another area of potential cooperation as Ethiopia seeks to strengthen its strategic and institutional capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strengthening Trade and Economic Ties<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economic cooperation remains an important pillar of Ethiopia\u2013Russia relations. Russia supplies Ethiopia with agricultural machinery and other industrial and energy-related equipment, while Ethiopia exports products such as coffee, flowers and textiles to the Russian market. Both countries have opportunities to expand bilateral trade, diversify exports and encourage investment in agriculture, manufacturing, energy and other productive sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to 2025 report, bilateral trade has increased threefold to approximately 435 million US dollars. Further efforts to improve market access and business partnerships could create additional opportunities for exporters and investors in both countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cooperation in Nuclear Energy and Emerging Technologies<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peaceful nuclear energy is another potential area of strategic cooperation. Russia’s state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, has engaged with Ethiopia on cooperation related to civilian nuclear applications and potential nuclear power development. Progress in this area will depend on the implementation of agreed arrangements, technical feasibility, financing, regulatory requirements and the necessary safety standards. Cooperation could also expand into space science, artificial intelligence, cyber security, digital infrastructure and scientific research. Healthcare, academic exchanges, professional training and cultural cooperation remain additional areas of shared interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education and Skills Development<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Educational cooperation has contributed to people-to-people ties between Ethiopia and Russia. In this sector 20, 000 ton 25, 000 Ethiopians have benefited from educational and professional training opportunities in Russia over the years. Expanded academic exchanges, scholarships and technical training could further strengthen human resource development and support Ethiopia’s ambitions in science, technology, healthcare and other specialized fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Strategic Partnership with Long-Term Potential<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third Russia\u2013Africa Summit represents an opportunity to translate longstanding historical relations into practical cooperation that delivers tangible economic and developmental benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Ethiopia, stronger engagement with Russia could support trade diversification, agricultural development, energy cooperation, technology transfer and educational exchanges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Summit is expected to offer Ethiopia an opportunity to pursue stronger trade relations, attract investment and explore technology partnerships that support its national development priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
