The future of electric vehicles (EVs) may seem closely associated with Norway, China, and the technology hubs of California. However, according to a report by Bloomberg Originals, Ethiopia is emerging as a country driving this transformation with remarkable speed and boldness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Ethiopia has no established reputation as an automobile manufacturing hub, it has suddenly attracted global attention through a groundbreaking policy decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visionary leadership and commitment of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) have enabled Ethiopia to emerge as a pioneer and role model in the global transition to electric mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prime Minister’s exemplary leadership in promoting a green economy, reducing carbon emissions, and saving the country\u2019s significant amounts of foreign currency previously spent on fuel imports has become a major driving force behind Ethiopia’s rapid development and technological transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This achievement has also enabled the country to combine its natural resources with renewable energy utilization, providing a practical contribution to global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ethiopia’s bold and innovative policy decision is expected to strengthen the country’s position at the 32nd Conference of the Parties (COP32), where it can present its achievements with confidence and a strong sense of accomplishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the conference, Ethiopia’s experience is expected to serve as a practical example of successful climate commitments, shifting the focus of African and developing countries from the challenges posed by climate change to tangible solutions and measurable progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will further showcase the Prime Minister’s vision of green development to the international community and position Ethiopia as a leading force in renewable energy and green economic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2024, Ethiopia banned the importation of petrol and diesel powered vehicles as part of its efforts to promote electric mobility and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, the number of petrol-powered vehicles in Addis Ababa and other major Ethiopian cities is reportedly declining, while vehicle importers and showrooms are increasingly shifting their focus towards electric vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Bloomberg Originals, fully assembled electric vehicles are subject to taxation, while imported electric vehicle components that have not yet been assembled are exempt from taxes. This policy is intended to encourage domestic vehicle assembly and support the development of local manufacturing industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Available information also indicates that the government has issued licenses to 17 companies involved in electric vehicle assembly and manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
