Haramaya University hosted the distinguished plant breeder and World Food Prize laureate, Professor Gebisa Ejeta, who delivered an inspiring public lecture urging African youth to embrace education, innovation, and creativity as the foundations of Africa\u2019s transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking under the theme \u201cAfrican Youth for Africa\u2019s Transformation,\u201d Professor Ejeta emphasized that the continent\u2019s future lies firmly in the hands of its young generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfrican youth must educate themselves to claim their rightful role in Africa\u2019s transformation,\u201d he stated, highlighting the central role of human capital development in driving sustainable progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Ejeta underscored that Africa\u2019s long-term growth and prosperity depend on harnessing creativity, innovation, and strong managerial skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The professor cited global success stories, including the United States, Europe, the Asian Tigers, and BRICS nations, as examples of economies propelled by science, technology, and innovation. Noting that Africa is home to more than 400 million young people aged 15\u201335, the professor stressed the urgency of empowering youth through quality education, technology, and creative thinking to address both local and global challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawing from his personal journey, Professor Ejeta encouraged students to pursue excellence through discipline, hard work, and effective time management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflecting on his years at Haramaya University, the professor shared his formula for success: \u201cI focused on my studies, managed my time well, took on extra jobs at the university to earn additional income, and played basketball for recreation. Overall, I used my time productively to achieve results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event opened with welcoming remarks from Jemal Yousuf(PhD), President of Haramaya University, who expressed deep appreciation for the professor\u2019s visit. \u201cOur distinguished Professor Gebisa Ejeta generously shares his life lessons with our community to inspire Africa\u2019s transformation,”Jemal said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to science, education, and humanity, Haramaya University honoured Professor Gebisa Ejeta by naming its library after him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his visit on December 30, 2025, Professor Ejeta and his family pledged to support the enhancement of the library\u2019s facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Tilahun Shiferaw, Director of the University Library and Information Service, announced the launch of a digital exhibition showcasing Professor Ejeta\u2019s remarkable life and career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibit features over 260 scholarly publications, numerous prestigious awards including honours from the World Food Program, a former U.S. President, and Purdue University, as well as a rich photographic archive, documented his inspiring journey at Haramaya University.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
