The sweeping development works underway in Addis Ababa are drawing admiration from members of the Ethiopian diaspora, many of whom say the capital is rapidly transforming into a world-class city.

In recent years, the city administration has intensified efforts to make the capital more livable for residents and more attractive to visitors. Large-scale infrastructure projects, urban beautification programs, corridor development, and recreational facilities are reshaping the city’s stature and global reputation. Diaspora members who spoke to AMN said the ongoing progress is positioning Addis Ababa to compete with internationally recognized cities.

Engineering expert Mentesnot Tamiru, who has lived in North America for nearly 20 years, expressed amazement at the changes he witnessed during his recent visit. He recalled that in the past, school construction projects focused mainly on erecting buildings, with little consideration for playgrounds and recreational spaces. Today, however, newly built schools are equipped with modern play grounds and recreational facilities in their areas.

Mentesnot also highlighted the remarkable development of the “Children’s Village” in the Kazanchis area. He further praised the city’s emerging 24/7 working culture and the heightened motivation among public employees.

Another diaspora member, Kaleb Lemma, who lived in Australia for more than 23 years, said he was profoundly impressed by the city’s remarkable modernization and the extensive beautification initiatives transforming its landscape.

According to him, Addis Ababa’s infrastructure and urban landscape were previously far from modern standards, but the ongoing corridor development has brought visible and transformative change.

Kaleb noted that the capital, once known for limited nightlife activity, has become vibrant and enjoyable after dark. He also emphasized that the sculptures and artistic elements integrated into the development projects reflect Ethiopia’s rich culture and traditions, giving the city a distinctive identity unlike any other.

The capital’s rapid progress and appealing urban transformation have sparked curiosity and enthusiasm among potential visitors.

“If the development continues at this pace,” Kaleb said, “Addis Ababa will become the New York of Africa within the next five years.”
