In a message shared on her official social media page, Addis Ababa City Mayor Adanech Abiebie announced that the city administration had held a productive discussion with Islamic religious leaders and followers in Addis Ababa under the theme, “Religious Institutions in the Government’s Vision of Synergy.”
The Mayor noted that Ethiopia is a country endowed with rich religious, cultural, and traditional diversity, emphasizing that it is not a nation where one group thrives while another is marginalized, but rather one in which all religions flourish equally.
The Mayor further underscored that, like all other religions, Islam has made a significant contribution to preserving Ethiopia’s ancient heritage, history, and traditions and passing them on to future generations. She added that Islam has also played a remarkable role in safeguarding national interests, promoting morality and human compassion, and supporting development efforts that are helping build today’s Ethiopia.
“Not only historically, but also during the recent years of reform, religious institutions in our city have made an irreplaceable contribution to comprehensive peacebuilding, development, and the journey toward prosperity,” Mayor Adanech said.
During the discussion, the Mayor said the city administration had reached a common understanding on strengthening this vital role through close collaboration to advance development, foster social cohesion, promote peace, and jointly safeguard Ethiopia’s national interests.
The Mayor further noted that the discussion forum also served as an effective platform for identifying gaps observed in the process and exploring ways to address them through cooperation.
Concluding the discussion, the Mayor expressed her heartfelt gratitude, on behalf of herself and the city administration, to the respected Islamic religious leaders and followers for their active participation and for the constructive ideas and feedback they shared.
