Addis Ababa City Mayor Adanech Abiebie announced that, over the past nine months of the current fiscal year, significant progress has been made in improving residential areas across the capital in ways that uphold human dignity.

Speaking during the city administration’s nine-month performance review for the 2026 fiscal year, the mayor described the development efforts as both valuable and commendable.

She highlighted the completion and handover of modern housing units that meet the city’s standards, noting that many residents have been able to return to improved homes in the same areas where they previously lived. In locations where more than 1,000 residents had been displaced, the administration developed housing by utilizing expanded spaces and successfully redistributed homes to the residents.

The newly constructed housing areas are equipped with essential infrastructures, including drainage systems, clean water supply, electricity, and other basic services.

According to the mayor, the proportion of slum areas in Addis Ababa has decreased dramatically from 74 percent to 30 percent over the past five years. This transformation has resulted in the construction of modern housing across all sub-cities, enhancing the overall appearance and livability of the capital.

She further noted that these developments have not only improved housing conditions but have also fostered healthier environments that support social interaction and a more modern lifestyle.

Mayor Adanech added that such progress has strengthened Addis Ababa’s position as a diplomatic hub for continental and international institutions, while also contributing to the growth of the tourism sector.

The expansion of tourist destinations, she said, is helping to boost Ethiopia’s income.

Overall, she concluded, the city’s ongoing development efforts reflect a commitment to creating living conditions that respect and promote human dignity.
