In a message shared on her official social media platform this afternoon, Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie announced that the Ethiopian capital hosted Africa’s first-ever “City Mountain Bike Eliminator Pro League” competition today. She said the city has opened a new chapter in its history.

The “City Mountain Bike Eliminator Pro League,” which began at the Adwa Victory Memorial a symbol of the historic Victory of Adwa and a source of pride for Black people around the world featured intense, vibrant atmosphere and high-energy competition among professional cyclists from more than 24 countries, the statement reads.
Mayor Adanech noted that sports serve as one of the strongest platforms for connecting people, strengthening communication, and enhancing international cooperation.

She added that the government’s growing focus on the sports sector has enabled Ethiopia to host three international competitions within just two weeks, aligning with the administration’s efforts to connect the country’s sports-loving public with global sporting events.
On behalf of the city administration, the Mayor expressed her deepest gratitude to the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) for selecting Addis Ababa the diplomatic capital of Africa and the Adwa Victory Memorial, a symbol of the victory of Black peoples, as the host venue for the race. She also welcomed confirmation that the event will be held in the city next year.

The mayor further thanked sports leaders, partner organizations, and volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure the competition’s success, as well as Addis Ababa residents for demonstrating exceptional hospitality, humility, and enthusiasm for sports.
