Addis Ababa is steadily strengthening its position as a leading hub for conference tourism by transforming its diplomatic prominence into a powerful driver of economic growth.
The major international events scheduled to take place across the Ethiopian capital throughout 2026 reflect the city’s growing recognition as one of Africa’s preferred destinations for conference tourism.
According to Conference Alert, a platform that tracks verified international meetings, conferences, and seminars, nearly 200 conferences are expected to be hosted in Addis Ababa before the end of 2026. These events will span diverse sectors, including business, engineering, technology, medicine, education, artificial intelligence, sociology, banking, youth affairs, tourism, and law.

Large-scale development projects underway in the city are further strengthening Addis Ababa’s emergence as an international metropolitan center. Landmark facilities such as the Adwa Victory Memorial, the state-of-the-art Science Museum, and the Addis International Convention Center have significantly eased the city’s previous shortage of modern conference and meeting venues.
Recently inaugurated facilities, including advanced laboratories at the Armauer Hansen Research Institute, are also expected to enhance Addis Ababa’s appeal as a destination for scientific conferences and research gatherings.
Similarly, the newly completed Sports Park is anticipated to create fresh opportunities for international sports conferences, exhibitions, and competitions.

Conference tourism generates substantially higher foreign currency earnings than conventional leisure tourism. In addition to benefiting hotels, the sector creates broad economic opportunities for transportation services, cultural clothing businesses, restaurants, and the wider hospitality industry.
The city’s corridor development projects have also transformed Addis Ababa’s pedestrian infrastructure and urban landscape to standards comparable with globally recognized cities, providing visitors with a safer, cleaner, and more convenient environment to move around and engage in commercial activities.
The international events planned for the coming months are expected to further reinforce Addis Ababa’s growing reputation as Africa’s emerging center for conference tourism.
