Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos has called for deeper engagement between Ethiopia and the United Kingdom, emphasizing the importance of dialogue, trust, and collaboration in addressing global challenges and unlocking new opportunities for shared growth and prosperity.

Speaking at a diplomatic dinner hosted by Sidara Group and co-organised by the Labour African Network in London and the Ethiopian Embassy, Gedion said the Ethiopiaโ€“UK relationship is built not only through official institutions but also through the enduring connections between businesses, educational institutions, diaspora communities, and citizens. The Foreign Minister described these people-to-people links as the foundation of a resilient and lasting partnership.

The Foreign Minister highlighted Ethiopiaโ€™s ongoing reform agenda and the countryโ€™s long-term development ambitions, underscoring efforts to strengthen the economy, expand opportunities for its youthful population, and promote inclusive and sustainable growth.

He expressed confidence in Ethiopiaโ€™s future, citing the resilience of its people and the growing sense of opportunity across the country.

Looking ahead, Gedion pointed to significant potential for expanded cooperation in trade, investment, education, research, technology, innovation, and climate resilience. He stressed that stronger international partnerships will be essential in navigating an increasingly complex global environment and delivering tangible benefits to citizens in both countries.

Chair of the Labour African Network Earnest Ambe in his welcoming speech commended LAN for helping amplify Africa’s voice within UK policymaking, business and diplomatic circles. He also highlighted Ethiopiaโ€™s economic growth as one of Africa’s largest and fastest-growing markets.

In his vote of thanks, Ethiopiaโ€™s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Biruk Mekonnen thanked the host, the LAN and partners for bringing together leaders from government and business to advance stronger UKโ€“Africa engagement. He described the growing Ethiopiaโ€“UK relationship as a platform for expanding trade, investment and innovation, expressing confidence that deeper economic partnerships with Ethiopia and Africa will create new opportunities, shared prosperity and lasting growth for all, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.
