Addis Ababa has undertaken extensive efforts in solid and liquid waste management, contributing significantly to the cityβs cleanliness, beauty, and overall development. Over the past five years, the city administration has implemented an integrated and modern waste management system designed not only to keep the city clean and livable but also to protect public health and create economic opportunities. Through this system, large volumes of solid and liquid waste are being collected, processed, recycled, and reused. Waste management is therefore evolving beyond the traditional practice of collection and disposal toward a more sustainable approach focused on resource recovery, recycling, reuse, and energy production.
The sector is also contributing to economic and social development by creating employment opportunities for young people, women, and community-based associations. At the same time, innovative practices are turning what was once viewed primarily as urban waste and a source of pollution into valuable economic resources.
Large quantities of compost are produced annually from solid waste and used to support urban agriculture. Solid and liquid wastes are also being utilized for energy production, further demonstrating the economic potential of effective waste management. These efforts have contributed to a cleaner, healthier, and more attractive Addis Ababa. The cityβs progress in waste management and urban cleanliness has also attracted international recognition, with Addis Ababa being recognized among Africaβs 10 cleanest cities.
According to the Mayorβs Office, the improvements in cleanliness reflect the cityβs progress toward higher standards of urban sanitation and infrastructure development. The achievements are further strengthening Addis Ababaβs image as a clean, livable, and attractive cityβand reinforcing its position as Africaβs diplomatic capital.
