In a statement released on her official social media platform this evening, Mayor of Addis Ababa Adanech Abiebie announced that the city administration has concluded a two-day discussion on its strategic plan for the next five years and the detailed plan for the 2019 Ethiopian fiscal year.
She said the discussions helped make the plans more concrete and created strong understanding and readiness to implement them effectively over the next five years, while fulfilling the trust and responsibility entrusted to the administration by the city’s residents.
Building on national policies and strategies, and following the renewed mandate given by the public, the administration has made its central vision to continue the journey it has begun to make Addis Ababa a “beacon of prosperity,” thereby contributing to the broader national vision of making Ethiopia a model country.
The Mayor said the achievements recorded during the past five years, the determination of the people and government to overcome poverty, the culture of hard work developed in the city, commitment to serving the public with integrity, the experience of delivering quickly and with quality even under difficult circumstances, and the efficient use of the budget will serve as important foundations for the success of the new plan.
She outlined several key areas of focus for the coming five years. These include strengthening institutional capacity through improved working systems and organizational structures; providing advanced and technology-driven public services; rapidly developing integrated and high-quality infrastructure; and not only constructing new infrastructure but also properly managing and maintaining existing facilities.
The administration will also focus on expanding access to clean drinking water and housing; ensuring accessibility, quality and equity in social services such as health and education; delivering health services that meet international standards; positioning Addis Ababa as a center for health tourism; and strengthening the city’s status as a major tourism destination.
Other priorities include making Addis Ababa one of Africa’s best cities for raising children; expanding opportunities for young people; increasing women’s political participation and ensuring their economic and social empowerment; promoting social justice by institutionalizing a culture of volunteerism; strengthening corridor and riverside development; increasing productivity; reducing dependency on aid; creating extensive employment opportunities; promoting urban agriculture; modernizing wastewater management systems; and establishing cleanliness and proper waste management as a culture.
Overall, she said, the plan aims to make Addis Ababa a clean, beautiful and comfortable city for everyone.
The Mayor said the plan is designed with a strategic outlook and focuses on planning and implementing measures to achieve the city’s vision. It is also intended to be flexible, inclusive, equitable and participatory.
According to Mayor Adanech, the planning discussion was also designed to ensure that the city’s leadership fully understands the plan, provides strategic leadership, maintains unity of thought, remains free from conflicting interests, embraces a “Yes, We Can” spirit, demonstrates consistency in implementation, and maintains commitment and leadership discipline.
She added that the administration is committed to strengthening transparency and accountability and ensuring that residents share the city’s vision and goals.
“Development cannot be achieved by the government alone,” the Mayor said, stressing the importance of involving all residents, individuals and stakeholders, while encouraging the private sector to play a greater role.
She further said the city administration will strengthen its culture of 24/7 implementation and work with greater commitment to realize the ambitious vision it has set for Addis Ababa.
