Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie announced this afternoon in a message shared on her official social media platform that she has launched the city’s 33rd annual education conference under the theme “A Brighter Tomorrow Through Today’s Minds.”

According to the mayor, the annual education conference serves as a platform through which the city administration works to ensure quality education, expand access to education, and make the teaching and learning process healthier and more effective.

The conference also provides an opportunity to draw lessons from best practices and experiences gained in the education sector. It brings stakeholders together to identify existing limitations, address areas that require improvement, develop common solutions, and set shared directions for the future.

The mayor said the city administration has been carrying out effective activities with a strong focus on improving student performance. As a result, education outcomes in the city have improved by 33 percent, she said. However, the mayor stressed that the administration expects better results and that more work remains to be done.

She further called on teachers and other education stakeholders to work with dedication and rally together to nurture a generation of students who are innovative, capable of solving problems, grounded in ethics, and equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to society.

Mayor Adanech further stated that the city administration has made education its major investment by allocating the largest share of its budget to the sector.

The mayor said the administration recognizes the importance of building the foundation of a generation from the very beginning, noting that critical stages of brain development take place during early childhood. She said the city is therefore placing strong emphasis on early childhood education.

“Starting from this foundation, we are working to strengthen education at both primary and secondary school levels,” Mayor Adanech said. She added that the city administration expects to see a generation that achieves better academic results while also being shaped by discipline and strong values.

The mayor expressed her gratitude to teachers and other education stakeholders for the results achieved so far, and called on them to maintain their efforts.
