Speaker of the House of Peoplesโ Representatives Tagesse Chafo has announced that the formation of the new government and the opening ceremony of the House of Peoplesโ Representatives will take place on September 25, 2019 Ethiopian Calendar, following the completion of the 7th General Election.
In his message, the Speaker said the 7th General Election, in which 42 political parties, 10,438 candidates and more than 54 million voters participated, was successfully concluded in a peaceful, democratic, fair and credible manner.
Recalling Article 50(3) of the Constitution, Speaker Tagesse said the House of Peoplesโ Representatives is the highest federal authority and is accountable to the Ethiopian people. He also noted that Article 58(2) stipulates that the term of the House begins on the Monday of the last week of September.
He further cited Article 56 of the Constitution, which provides that the political party or coalition of parties that holds a majority of seats in the House shall form and lead the executive branch of the federal government.
Accordingly, he said the government formation and the opening ceremony of the House will be held on September 25, 2019 E.C.
The Speaker said preparations for the ceremony have been completed, adding that the newly elected government will assume responsibility for leading the country and its people for the next five years.
He also extended his best wishes for the coming period, expressing hope that it will be marked by peace, health, happiness, love, unity and prosperity.
