The Ethiopian National Defense Force, in a statement posted on its official social media page, announced the conclusion of a regional forum organized by the Ethiopian Navy General Directorate with the support of the European Union.
The forum brought together naval commanders from Yemen, Oman, Djibouti, Somaliland, and Puntland. It provided a platform for exchanging experiences on joint maritime search-and-rescue operations and security cooperation among countries in the region.
At the closing session, Ethiopian Navy Deputy Commander for Operations Commodore Jemal Tufisa said the forum had helped build practical capacity to safeguard regional maritime security through cross-border information sharing, identification of areas of operation, and joint operational exercises.
He also expressed confidence that participants would translate the knowledge and experience gained during the workshop into action upon returning to their respective countries, contributing to effective regional maritime security efforts that meet international standards.
Search-and-rescue project expert Rear Admiral Kenneth Nijens and Master Kuraja Mishini, Manager of the Djibouti Code of Conduct, praised the Ethiopian Navy’s initiative to promote regional cooperation.
In their remarks, they highlighted the importance of establishing communication channels for information exchange and informed decision-making, as well as developing common principles among countries and institutions to address regional security threats collectively. They also expressed their commitment to working together toward shared solutions.
Ethiopian Navy Commander Vice Admiral Kindu Gezu attended the closing session and presented certificates and gifts to the forum participants.
