Speaking about the future of Ethiopian cities, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed emphasized that the ongoing urban transformation known as the “corridor development” is a comprehensive initiative designed to achieve multiple social, economic, and environmental objectives.
The Prime Minister noted that every development project creates jobs, but corridor development goes further. It not only generates employment during the construction phase but also ensures sustained job opportunities after completion, as its activities and services are continuous in nature.
Citing the ongoing work in Addis Ababa, the Prime Minister highlighted how the project has helped produce a new generation of skilled engineers. These individuals are gaining practical, hands-on experience that often goes beyond what is acquired through formal university education.
On the issue of connectivity, the Prime Minister recalled past challenges related to urban mobility. Abiy explained that the development of alternative routes, expansion of existing roads, and the separation of pedestrian walkways from vehicle lanes have greatly improved accessibility. For instance, congestion and mobility issues in areas like CMC have been significantly reduced, allowing residents to travel more efficiently.
Reflecting on tourism, he noted that Addis Ababa has experienced a significant increase in visitor numbers over the past year, highlighting the clear progress made compared to the previous year.
Both domestic and international tourists have contributed to increased national revenue.
Overall, the Prime Minister concluded that corridor development is positioning Addis Ababa as a symbol of prosperity, while also serving as a pathway for sustainable urban development across Ethiopia.
