The initiatives undertaken in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, to link environmental protection with tourism have been praised as exemplary by representatives of the Zambezi River Basin Commission.
During a visit to the Addis Ababa Riverside Development Project, representatives of the Commission’s member countries commended the city’s transformation of its riverbanks into vibrant public recreational spaces and attractive urban landscapes.
According to Felix Mosi Ngamlagosi, Executive Secretary of the Zambezi Watercourse Commission, Addis Ababa is becoming a model for African cities seeking to develop well-planned, attractive environments that can also serve as tourism destinations.

He noted that the ongoing changes in the Ethiopian capital are making the city an increasingly preferred destination for recreation and economic activities. Ngamlagosi encouraged other African cities to learn from Addis Ababa’s approach.
Chito Phiri, who visited from Zimbabwe, praised the development of public recreational parks in the city, saying the initiative enhances the capital’s appearance while creating a comfortable environment for residents and visitors.
He also highlighted that the strong emphasis placed on pedestrian walkways along the riverside and within the city’s corridor development projects helps promote a culture of walking, which contributes to healthier urban living.
Meanwhile, Manuel Chagulo from Mozambique said he had previously visited Addis Ababa 15 years ago and was impressed by the remarkable transformation and growth the city has undergone.
He emphasized that Ethiopia has achieved tangible progress through green development initiatives, adding that the changes taking place in Addis Ababa could serve as an example for other countries across Africa.
