The Ethiopian Electric Utility has launched one of the fastest electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Addis Ababa, marking a significant step toward advancing the country’s green mobility ambitions.
Ethiopian Electric Utility Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Getu Geremew, stated that the institution is contributing to Ethiopia’s efforts to foster a green economy and advance the realization of the Digital Ethiopia 2030 strategy.
He emphasized that the utility has been ensuring a reliable and uninterrupted power supply to EV charging stations established by various organizations.
According to the CEO, a total of 40 EV charging stations are currently under development nationwide, with 32 located in Addis Ababa and the remaining 8 in other cities.
State Minister of Transport and Logistics, Bareo Hassen, highlighted the rapid growth of electric vehicles in the country, noting that the number has surged from zero to 140,000 within just three to four years.
He also revealed that nearly 17 vehicle assembly plants have been established across Ethiopia, supporting the expanding EV ecosystem.
Looking ahead, the government plans to install 2,300 fast-charging stations nationwide, including 1,176 stations in Addis Ababa alone, to meet rising demand.
In addition, electric buses have now been introduced in nine cities across the country, while more than 100 electric buses are currently operating in Addis Ababa through a strong collaboration between the government and private sector partners.
The State Minister encouraged citizens to embrace electric vehicles as a sustainable alternative and reduce reliance on fuels.
