United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for Africa to secure the representation and fair participation it rightfully deserves in global decision-making.
The 39th African Union Summit is currently underway in Addis Ababa, the political capital of Africa.
Addressing the summit, Guterres stressed that Africa must have a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
The Secretary-General also called for an immediate end to ongoing conflicts in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, and other parts of the continent.
Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to strengthening efforts aimed at securing reliable financing for African peacekeeping operations.
The Secretary General further noted that although Africa contributes minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, it remains one of the regions most affected by climate change.
Guterres highlighted that the continent receives just 2 percent of global clean energy investment. He stressed that this must change.
The Secretary-General pledged to stand firmly with Africa until the end of his term.
