Mount Hambericho, located 260 kilometers from Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, has rapidly emerged as a unique and popular eco-tourism destination for both domestic and international travelers. What makes this mountain different from others is its remarkable 1,554 giant stairways that lead visitors to its Peak.
Standing at 3,058 meters above sea level, Hambericho is the first major mountain in the Central Ethiopia Region. The area has become increasingly attractive to tourists thanks to its lush greenery, clean air, and breathtaking natural beauty.
In an interview with Addis Media Network Digital, Muluken Desta, Head of the Hambericho Eco-Tourism Site and a local guide, explained that extensive research was carried out by scholars before the site was officially opened to tourism.

The name “Hambericho 777” originates from its connection to seven chain mountains surrounding the area. These peaks contain a rich mix of historical sites, natural springs, scenic valleys, and cultural landmarks. In total, the site is encircled by 33 small hills and 7 chain mountains, offering visitors unforgettable scenery.
Following a visit by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), several development projects were launched, significantly improving accessibility to the site. The 1,554 stairways now provide tourists with both a physical challenge and panoramic views. A traditional meeting hall accommodating over 300 people has also been constructed near the destination.
It is reported that after the infrastructure developments, tourist flow to the area has tripled. Since the launch of the Hambericho 777 project, visitor numbers have increased sharply 500 to 600 visitors on weekends, and 250 to 300 on weekdays.

Hambericho Mountain is now being developed under a community-based tourism model, ensuring tangible benefits for the local community. Direct revenue comes from entrance fees, tent rentals, and other services, generating up to 50,000 birr on weekends alone.
For visitors wishing to stay overnight, safe and comfortable tent-rental services are available.
These days, Hambericho Mountain has become a new beacon of hope for Ethiopia’s tourism sector, blending natural beauty, cultural heritage, and strong community engagement.
