The Mayor of Addis Ababa, Adanech Abiebie, recently spoke to Addis Media Network about the city’s ongoing development initiatives.

The Mayor highlighted the funding sources and the dedication behind the city’s remarkable progress, emphasizing that Ethiopia has successfully challenged the long-held belief that, as a low-income country, it cannot undertake large-scale projects.

Addressing common questions about financing, Mayor Adanech clarified that these mega-projects are funded through the country’s own resources and capacities, not foreign aid.

“The Addis Ababa’s government budget is being used to build a nation,” the Mayor stressed. “It is being invested in sustainable national developments that will benefit the upcoming generations.”

Mayor noted that in the previous fiscal year, 71% of the city’s capital budget was directly allocated to development projects. Currently, mega projects worth 1.3 trillion birr are under construction through joint partnerships between the government and private sector.

According to the mayor, investors are contributing their expertise and financial resources, while the community supports the transformation by improving their surroundings and acting as guardians of the development process.
