January is a special month in Ethiopia’s Amhara Region, marked by a vibrant calendar of religious and cultural events. Bahir Dar stands out as one of the cities where these celebrations are observed with exceptional color and excitement.
The Bahir Dar City Administration is actively working to attract both international and domestic visitors to take part in the festivities. Under the theme “January in Bahir Dar,” a wide range of activities is being organized to showcase the city’s rich culture, natural beauty, and growing tourism appeal.
Deputy Mayor of Bahir Dar and Chairperson of the Organizing Committee for “January in Bahir Dar,” Asme Birlie, said extensive preparations are underway to celebrate the month in a grand and engaging way.

Deputy Mayor further explained that the festival officially began on January 1, 2018 (E.C.) with a cultural and arts festival and will continue through January 30, 2018, featuring a variety of events.
Key highlights of the program include bicycle and canoe races, along with the religious celebration of Sebar St. George on January 18, one of the most important spiritual occasions of the month.
The Deputy Mayor noted that this year’s celebration is especially distinctive, as Bahir Dar’s beauty has been significantly enhanced through corridor development projects, improved infrastructure, and the creation of a dedicated and comfortable cycling route for the bicycle race.
The month-long festivities will conclude with a beauty contest and a panel discussion, bringing the celebration to a colorful close.
Calling on foreign tourists and members of the Ethiopian diaspora, the Deputy Mayor invited all to visit Bahir Dar and experience the unique spirit of “January in Bahir Dar.”
