Addis Ababa City Mayor Adanech Abiebie said Ethiopia is working toward sustainable development by preventing both man-made and natural disasters, strengthening resilience, and supporting one another through collective effort and hard work.
In a message shared on her official social media platform, the Mayor stated that begging and dependency foster laziness, undermine human dignity, and do not ensure sustainable development in the nation.
She stressed that a fundamental change in mindset is therefore essential, highlighting the critical role of educational and religious institutions in transforming the culture of dependency and begging. To support this shift, Mayor Adanech noted that the Addis Ababa Disaster Risk Management Council has officially begun its work, focusing on reducing disaster vulnerability, strengthening preparedness, and enhancing response capacity.
The mayor explained that these efforts aim to sustain the nationwide operational reforms currently underway. The Mayor further announced that a shared understanding has been reached for the Council to take a leading role in ongoing initiatives to change negative dependency-oriented attitudes.
