Speaking on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Ethiopian Air Force, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated that the institution has played an outstanding role over the past nine decades in safeguarding Ethiopia’s sovereignty and defending the nation against its enemies.
The Prime Minister noted that although the Air Force has experienced various challenges throughout its history, it has today reached an unprecedented level of operational capacity and technological advancement.
Abiy further emphasized that beyond protecting Ethiopia’s territorial integrity, the Ethiopian Air Force has made meaningful contributions to peace and security across Africa. In this regard, the Prime Minister highlighted its participation in peacekeeping missions in several countries, noting that these efforts have earned the institution recognition as a source of pride for the African continent.
In his address, Prime Minister Abiy underscored that the primary responsibility for safeguarding national interests rests with citizens themselves. Protecting Ethiopia’s interests, he said, is the duty of Ethiopians, while the support of friends remains voluntary. Therefore, Ethiopians must take the lead in defending and securing their national interests.
“We have no other motherland besides Ethiopia, and Ethiopia has no children other than us,” the Prime Minister stated, calling on citizens to stand by their country during times of both success and hardship.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening the Ethiopian Air Force, Prime Minister Abiy said continued efforts will focus not only on technological advancement but also on building strong human capacity.
The Prime Minister also noted that the achievements of the Air Force are the cumulative result of the sacrifices and dedication of many heroes. In this context, Abiy paid tribute to General Legesse Tefera, General Ashenafi Wolde Tsadik, Colonel Bezabih Petros, and the current Commander of the Ethiopian Air Force, Lieutenant General Yilma Merdassa.
