Spokesperson Ambassador Nebiat Briefs the Media on Preparations for AU and Italy-Africa Summits

The Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Nebiat Getachew, gave a press briefing on the general arrangements made for the 39th African Union Summit and the Italy-Africa Summit to be held next week.

Ambassador Nebiat stated that the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council will be held on 11–12 February, the 39th Summit on 14–15 February, and the Italy-Africa Summit on 13 February.

The spokesperson noted that Ethiopia has made full preparations in terms of content and logistics, underscoring the special significance of the summits for the country.

He pointed out that, through political diplomacy, Ethiopia is preparing to actively participate in the summits on issues that promote its national interests, while through economic diplomacy, preparations have been made to enhance conference tourism by providing special hospitality to participants that reflects Ethiopian culture and values.

Ambassador Nebiat said that this year, as in previous Summits, 179 young volunteers were recruited for the African Union Summit, demonstrating the principle that every citizen is a diplomat for his or her country.

He explained that this youth volunteer activity was carried out in line with the Youth Volunteer Service Framework established by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Ambassador Nebiat stated that Ethiopia has made full preparations in terms of logistics, protocol, and security.

The spokesperson noted that the theme of this year’s conference is “Assuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems to achieve the goals of Agenda 2063,” and that Ethiopia has carried out many activities in line with this theme. He explained that Ethiopia has made significant progress in water cooperation and has remained committed to transforming the Nile Basin Cooperation Framework into a Commission.

He highlighted that Ethiopia has connected its neighbors through renewable energy, carried out water conservation efforts that have restored and enhanced water resources, and made significant contributions with the Green Legacy Initiative.

On the occasion, he called on all Ethiopians, especially residents of Addis Ababa, to extend their usual cooperation to ensure the success of the Summits as to Ministry of foreign affairs of Ethiopia reported it.
