General Yimer Mekonnen said that Ethiopia’s quest for sea access is not a new political agenda but an issue deeply tied to the nation’s historical existence.
A symposium organized by Rehabilitation and Development Association of Former Army themed “Red Sea and Seaport” is being held at the Adwa Victory Memorial in AddisAbaba.
Speaking at the event, General Yimer Mekonnen, Head of Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) Education and Training Main Department, emphasized that Ethiopia’s quest for sea access is not a recent political agenda but an issue deeply intertwined with the country’s history and existence.
“The sea outlet issue is not a recent political interest; it is closely linked with Ethiopia’s very existence, and this reality should be clearly understood by all,” the General stated.
The general noted that the Red Sea has historically been connected to Ethiopia since ancient times, adding that it is regrettable that the sea has been separated from the motherland, in what he described as an unjust manner.
According to the General, ensuring access to the sea is a matter of national interest that would benefit not only Ethiopia but also the wider region.
The general further highlighted the area’s geostrategic significance, noting that Ethiopia’s presence could contribute to strengthening regional peace and stability beyond its own interests.
Meanwhile, President of the Rehabilitation and Development Association of Former Army Sergeant Berhanu Amare, said the association has 305 branches across the country and remains committed to standing alongside the nation, its people and the government.
Sergeant Berhanu also noted that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his government have brought the long-standing port issue into public discussion, adding that the association stands ready to contribute to national efforts on the matter.
