The Addis Ababa Transport Bureau has announced that it is undertaking large-scale reform initiatives to sustainably modernize the city’s transportation services and address longstanding infrastructure gaps.

In an interview with AMN, Deputy Head of the Bureau Dagnachew Shiferaw said the reform focuses on road improvements, the use of technology, and enhanced service delivery supported by the ongoing corridor development projects.

According to him, issues such as narrow roads, the lack of pedestrian sidewalks, and inadequate parking facilities, long-standing challenges in the city, are now being addressed through the corridor development initiative.

Dagnachew noted that the new system is playing a significant role in making transportation services more efficient.

He added that, as demand for public transport continues to rise, efforts are underway to increase the number of buses in order to ease the burden on commuters.

He further explained that these improvements will benefit not only residents of the city but also people from surrounding cities that are closely connected to Addis Ababa.

The deputy head also indicated that the city’s megenagna terminal, which serves between 150,000 and 200,000 passengers daily and is one of the 48 terminals in the capital, is not part of the corridor development program and therefore requires major improvements. To address congestion and long passenger waiting times, he said work has begun to construct new terminals in Yeka Sub-City and nearby areas.

He also stated that the number of buses have been increased to provide faster services to passengers traveling to Arabsa, Tafo, Ayat, Sarbet, and Koye Fache.

In addition, efforts are being made to ease the transportation shortage during nighttime hours. Measures are underway to ensure continuous service for travelers between 7:30 and 8:00 P. M followed by close monitoring to strengthen night transport services.
