The longstanding relationship between Ethiopia and France, rooted in more than a century of friendship and cooperation, continues to grow stronger through renewed partnerships and shared commitments.
France became the first European nation to establish an embassy in Addis Ababa in 1897, during the reign of Emperor Menelik II. Since then, the two countries have maintained close ties across key sectors including railway development, education, healthcare, culture, and heritage preservation.
French Development Agency (AFD) is providing substantial financial and technical support for the sustainable restoration and preservation of the Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches, one of Ethiopia’s most treasured UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The initiative reflects the strong commitment of both nations to safeguarding history and cultural heritage for future generations.
Cooperation between Ethiopia and France has also significantly contributed to archaeological research. Joint scientific studies carried out over several decades in the historic areas of Axum and Lalibela have played an important role in deepening global understanding of Ethiopia’s rich historical legacy.
In addition, the “Alliance Ethio-Française,” established in the late 1940s, continues to serve as a vibrant cultural bridge between the peoples of the two countries by promoting arts, language, music, and cultural exchange.
Beyond their historic ties, Ethiopia and France are now expanding cooperation into modern sectors aimed at strengthening Ethiopia’s economic growth and development.
France’s continued support for Ethiopia’s efforts to transform its immense tourism potential into tangible economic opportunities is also viewed as a key pillar in further enhancing the future partnership between the two nations.
