The Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission, in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has officially launched a national workshop focused on site selection criteria and site characterization for the country’s future nuclear power plant. Running from Monday, May 18, to Friday, May 22, 2026, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, the forum deliberates on the technical requirements and international best practices needed to build future nuclear infrastructure with the highest standards of caution and safety.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, the Deputy Commissioner of the Commission, Shiferaw Telila, emphasized Ethiopia’s firm stance, stating that nuclear power is not a luxury choice for the country, but rather a vital matter of survival to meet the ever-growing energy demand and to achieve a sustainable industrial transition. He pointed out that while the country is actively working on climate-friendly renewable energy to boost its economy, the rapid economic growth and expanding industries have made seeking a reliable and high-capacity alternative energy source an absolute necessity.

Since the construction of a nuclear power plant requires extreme caution, Ethiopia is currently placing significant emphasis on conducting the site selection and characterization process with meticulous care. This national initiative demonstrates Ethiopia’s strong commitment to realizing a reliable, secure, and purely peaceful nuclear energy development.

On his part, Michael Salmon, a Senior Nuclear Safety Officer at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), announced that the agency fully supports Ethiopia’s efforts to secure a reliable source of power through nuclear energy development. He further stated that the agency is dedicated to sharing the necessary international experience and expertise for the activities and safety measures being carried out in the sector, According to Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission
