Young voters in Addis Ababa are eagerly anticipating Ethiopia’s 7th General Election, scheduled for June 1, 2026, as they prepare to cast their ballots for the first time and help shape the country’s future.

Many of the newly registered voters who recently collected their voter identification cards told AMN that they are excited, motivated, and fully prepared to participate in the democratic process.

Among them is Emebet Alemu, a resident of Arada Sub-City, who described her voter registration experience as both memorable and encouraging.

“This is my first time registering to vote, and the entire process has been pleasant and exciting,” she said. “I am eagerly waiting for election day and looking forward to experiencing the voting process firsthand.”

Similarly, Firezer Alebachew, a resident of Gulele Sub-City, said she was unable to participate in the previous election because she had not yet reached voting age.

“In the past, I only heard about elections from older people, but this time I have personally registered and collected my voter card. It feels completely different,” she explained.

Firezer noted that she intends to vote for a political party that prioritizes job creation and opportunities for young people, adding that she is enthusiastic about taking part in the June 1 election.

Another first-time voter, Muna Alemar from Arada Sub-City, said she is fully prepared to fulfill her civic responsibility.

“I want to support a party that addresses the concerns of young people and low-income communities,” she said, noting that she plans to arrive at the polling station early on election day.

Tadesse Mengistu, a young resident of Gulele Sub-City, emphasized the importance of youth participation in strengthening democracy and building a prosperous nation.

According to Tadesse, free, fair, and peaceful elections are essential for ensuring stability and creating better opportunities for future generations.

“When young people actively participate in elections, they contribute to shaping a better future for themselves and for the country,” he said, encouraging fellow youth to take part in the electoral process and elect leaders they believe can best serve the nation.

The young voters interviewed by AMN agreed that the June 1 election represents an important opportunity for citizens to choose leaders capable of moving the country forward. They called on their peers to prepare for election day and actively exercise their democratic right to vote.
