Due to the special attention given to the sports sector by the Addis Ababa City Administration and the extensive sports infrastructure developments undertaken in recent years, the capital has emerged as a leading sports hub and a preferred destination for hosting continental and international sporting events.
In terms of infrastructure and hospitality, the construction of more than 1,580 public and youth sports centers across the city over the past few years has not only increased community participation in sports but has also created a strong foundation for hosting national, continental, and international competitions.

The city is practically demonstrating its status as a convenient and preferred sports destination by successfully hosting a variety of international cycling, athletics, street running, and other sporting events. A notable example is the recently concluded 19th Ethiopian Half Marathon, which was held at Meskel Square with great vibrancy.
Today, Addis Ababa has become a safe, vibrant, and attractive capital that brings together sports elites, major competitions, and enthusiastic fans from across the world.

In recent years, the integrated corridor development projects, riverside developments, and the expansion of standard sports facilities carried out by the city administration have done more than transform the city’s image; they have created enormous potential for the growth of sports tourism.
Beyond its sporting significance, the expansion of sports tourism has generated substantial economic and social benefits.

It has created extensive employment opportunities in the hospitality industry, transport sector, and among local micro and small enterprises.
According to information from the Mayor’s Office, this growing sports tourism sector is directly contributing to the city administration’s efforts to expand youth employment opportunities and ensure broader economic benefits for residents.
