The development works carried out in Addis Ababa’s healthcare sector over the past five years have expanded health services and introduced modern medical facilities across the city.

During this period, the city administration constructed and commissioned four new hospitals: Abebech Gobena, Lafto Specialized, Kolfe, and Gelan.

Alongside the construction of new hospitals, longstanding institutions such as Zewditu and Menelik II hospitals have undergone major upgrades, significantly improving the quality of their services. Ras Desta Damtew Hospital has also been completely rebuilt and modernized.

To bring healthcare services closer to communities, the city has constructed nine new health centers capable of providing primary hospital services. In addition, more than 40 aging health centers have been demolished, reconstructed, and equipped with modern medical equipment.

According to Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie, these achievements were made possible by protecting the city’s revenue from waste and allocating more than 71 percent of the budget to sustainable development and infrastructure.

Through out the process, a new work culture has taken root across the city, one that emphasizes completing every project before embarking on the next. In addition, the implementation of 24/7 operations across healthcare institutions has significantly strengthened their capacity to meet the healthcare needs of residents.

Beyond the construction and renovation of healthcare facilities, the city has equipped them with State-of-the-Art medical technologies, enabling the delivery of advanced healthcare services.

These facilities are now equipped with MRI machines, oxygen production plants, AI-powered digital X-ray systems, and modern laboratory services.

According to the city administration, these improvements have reduced the need for residents to seek medical treatment abroad at high cost while expanding access to advanced healthcare services within the capital.

Over the past five years, Addis Ababa has implemented extensive healthcare projects aimed at expanding access to medical services and strengthening healthcare infrastructure across the city.
