A high-level delegation led by Mark Mitchell, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Middle East and Africa, paid a working visit to the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute.
During the visit, the Institute’s Director General, Worku Gachena (PhD), briefed the delegation on the longstanding historical relationship between Ethiopia and the United States. He also presented an overview of the Institute’s key activities and achievements in the field of artificial intelligence.
Worku explained that the Institute has been successfully advancing research and development in artificial intelligence technologies.
He highlighted Ethiopia’s progress in natural language processing (NLP), noting that the country has begun training AI systems to understand indigenous Ethiopian languages for a wide range of practical applications. He further stated that Ethiopia is giving special attention to supporting startups and has created a favorable environment for collaboration and innovation in the AI sector.
Speaking on behalf of the U.S. delegation, Deputy Assistant Secretary Mark Mitchell expressed appreciation for the warm reception and comprehensive briefing. He said the Institute’s achievements had exceeded its expectations.
Mitchell commended the Institute’s strong support for startups and praised its work in robotics, hologram technology, natural language processing, and other areas, describing the initiatives as exemplary, according to the Institute.
Alongside the visit, the two sides held productive discussions on opportunities for Ethiopia and the United States to strengthen cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence technology.
